First impression
Gilks is one of those cafés that feels memorable before you've even ordered. From the outside it still has the feel of its former garage life, but inside it has been turned into a café with real character rather than a generic roadside stop. The motoring theme gives it a point of difference, but the reason I'd go back is much simpler: the food is great quality, the coffee is really good and the staff are incredibly friendly. It feels like a café that understands cyclists without making a big fuss about it.

Kineton is well placed for rides across south Warwickshire, especially if you're linking together routes from Warwick, Leamington, Southam, Wellesbourne, Burton Dassett or Edge Hill. The café also sits in a useful position for longer loops heading towards the north Cotswolds. One of Gilks' strengths is that it actively encourages cycling visits. The café's own website includes local bike ride suggestions, including road and mixed-terrain options, which is more than most cafés offer. That makes it feel less like cyclists are simply tolerated and more like riders are part of the intended audience.
Food, coffee and facilities
This is one of the stronger cafés on the list for food. The menu is more substantial than a simple coffee-and-cake stop, with breakfast, brunch and lunch options available. Bike-friendliness
Gilks is genuinely well set up for cyclists. There is a proper bike rack outside, and the café offers free bicycle security chains, you just have to ask at the counter and they will supply you one! This is the only cafe I have found in the region doing this. It is also worth noting that the bike rack is quite close to the road. However, what not many people know is there is a smaller rack at the back of the cafe. This is definitely worth keeping in mind for that extra bit of security. Gilks is clearly a café that has thought about bikes. A proper rack is much better than trying to balance your bike against a wall, window or fence.
Is it worth the detour?
Yes, I think Gilks is worth building into a route. It may not have the canal-side setting of Hatton Locks or the open views of Hilltop, but it has a different strength: it works extremely well as a cyclist's café. The food is good, the coffee is good, the welcome is friendly and the location makes sense for a lot of south Warwickshire rides. The only thing I would bear in mind is that Gilks can get busy at weekends, especially when classic car or motorbike groups are visiting. That is part of the charm of the place, but if you're riding with a larger group, it is worth allowing a bit of extra time or checking ahead before relying on it as a quick stop.

The bike rack sits close enough to the road that I would always lock the bike properly, and it can get busy at weekends when car and motorbike groups are visiting. Even with those small cautions, it is exactly the kind of independent café that makes a Warwickshire café ride worth planning.
